For the moment models like the Renaultsport Clio and MINI Cooper S seem to have the hot-hatch market all sewn up. But these spy shots reveal the Ford Fiesta ST is on the way – although we’ll have to wait until late 2012 before we can drive it.
Despite these pictures – taken in Michigan, USA – showing a five-door model, a Ford spokesman confirmed
the Fiesta ST will be available in three-door guise only. Ford America wouldn’t be able to get hold of a three-door body-shell to test because only the more practical five-door is sold in the US.
The Fiesta ST was previewed in concept form at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September this year and many of the design cues look set to make it on to the production car too. That means the large, upright, gaping grill and aggressive bodykit both feature.
Underneath the bonnet will be a 1.6-litre turbocharged EcoBoost engine packing 178bhp and 240Nm of torque. It is claimed to be able to do 0-60mph in less than seven seconds with a top speed in excess of 140mph.
Although Ford would reveal only that the ST boasts “tuned suspension geometry”, it’s expected that the finished car will feature many of the gadgets that are debuting on the Focus ST, including a torque vectoring system, CUSC and three-stage ESP.
