I've just come across a very interesting XR5 Turbo issue which has come to light just recently.
GCXR5 came in on Monday with an Exhaust leak or screech from his Turbo area when his engine was cold.
We let the car cool down , and put it on the hoist. When the wastegate lever was moved manually, the noise
stopped.
Off came the Turbo and we sent across to a central Turbo Specialist for inspection. On closer inspection, we
noticed that the exhaust turbine was covered in a dry muddy substance which confused us, as there has been
no Coolant loss in the Recovery tank, nor was there any water marks in the intake pipe.
The turbo Specialist has just rung me to inform me that the wastegate valve seat needed re facing, as it was
not seating properly causing boost pressure to leak past the chamber, and as a result, the turbo was only producing
5lbs boost at it's maximum. The muddy substance was a result of Mikey using an octane booster, which this guy
has told me you should never use on a Turbo Vehicle as it melts down the Wastegate dump valve. This is something
I didn't know, and I can honestly say that I have learnt something today.
Not only was this vehicle a very quick vehicle , especially after Custom Tuning, but you can imagine how quick it could
have been had the turbo pressure been at it's peak.
I don't think anyone has come across this issue before, so I thought i would write it up as a potential concern.
Mikey has purchased a New Blue LV and we've swapped the mods over this week, simply because the change over
price was excellent, plus the LS was now out of warranty, and it seemed a good time to change over. How Quick is Blue
Thunder Mk 2 going to be??
